Call Today on Immigration Reform

Forwarded from the USCCB

Dear Colleagues:

As you know, the stakes remain high for immigration reform.  Senators are receiving many calls but they need to hear even more from the Catholic community.

As a partner of the U.S. bishops' Justice for Immigrants Campaign, the Department of Social Development and World Peace asks you once again to do all you can to continue weigh in with Senators.  Share this e-mail with everyone you know and urge them to call also.

When Senators return on Monday (March 27), the Senate Judiciary Committee will begin "marking up" immigration reform legislation.  CALL TODAY (the Capitol Switchboard number is: 202-224-3121) and urge your Senators to:

1)      Support an amendment in the Judiciary Committee which would provide a path to permanent residency for the 11-12 million undocumented persons in the country;

2)      Support an amendment which would provide a path to permanent residency for participants in any temporary worker program;

3)      Support an amendment offered by Senator Richard Durbin (D-Illinois) to strike language making undocumented immigrants criminals and exempting humanitarian workers from criminal penalties for assisting an undocumented immigrant;

4)      Oppose amendments by Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) which would authorize state and local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws; and

5)      Contact Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) and urge him to honor the committee process and to take up the Senate Judiciary Committee bill on the floor of the U.S. Senate.

6)      Support comprehensive immigration reform and oppose enforcement-only proposals when the Senate takes up immigration the week of March 27;

7)      Support any amendment which would provide a path to permanent residency for the 11-12 million undocumented and oppose any amendment which would strike language which provides the path to permanent residency for this population;

8)      Urge Senator Frist to take up the Senate Judiciary Committee legislation and OPPOSE THE MOTION TO PROCEED if he chooses to take up his own enforcement-only legislation

Besides phone calls, you may also want to take action by goint to: http://justiceforimmigrants.com/action.html

Thank you!
