Homelessness Prevention Program Action Alert

Action Needed: Urge Governor Blagojevich to fund the Homelessness Prevention Program at $11 million in his fiscal year 2007 budget

Problem: The State of Illinois' highly successful Homelessness Prevention Program has helped over 43,000 households avoid homelessness since 1999, with more than 80% remaining stably housed. However, 88% of local providers did not have enough funds to meet the need in their communities last year. With heating costs expected to rise as much as 70% this year, we can anticipate that even more households will have a financial crisis that jeopardizes their housing.

Background: The Homelessness Prevention Program provides a grant averaging less than $600 for rent, utility, legal or other assistance to households experiencing a short-term crisis. Such a small grant keeps people out of homeless shelters and in housing. By increasing Homelessness Prevention funding, the State of Illinois can better insure that all our residents have their housing needs met. The program has been funded at $5 million for the past three years.

Catholic Social Teaching: Catholic Social Teaching has long supported housing as a basic human right. The Homelessness Prevention Program can help prevent families from losing their home.
