Dear Secretary Kempthorne,Thank you for allowing this opportunity to comment on cooperative conservation initiatives. Voluntary, cooperative conservation is an important tool, but it is not a substitute for our nation's environmental laws such as the Endangered Species Act and Clean Water Act. Rather, our conservation laws have paved the way for cooperative conservation, for example by setting goals for recovering endangered species and cleaning up the nation's rivers and waterways.
The Endangered Species Act is a safety net for wildlife, fish, and plants on the brink of extinction. The act has been successful in helping to prevent the extinction of the American bald eagle, as well as many other species of fish, plants and wildlife. We owe it to our children and grandchildren to be good stewards of the environment and leave behind a legacy of protecting endangered species and the special places they call home.
The Endangered Species Act works and should remain strong. I urge your administration to work to fund the act's core programs and cooperative conservation efforts fully. Thank you for considering my comments.
Sincerely,
