Preserve Religious Freedom - End Ban for Institutional and Ecumenical Religious Travel to Cuba
Please find below 3 action alerts from the Chicago Religious Leaders Network on Latin America, customized for Speaker of the House Hastert, Congressman Hyde, and Congressman Weller.
Dear Ecumenical Friends in Rep. Dennis Hastert's District,
We need your help! For two years, the Treasury Department has unilaterally implemented new travel restrictions to Cuba prohibiting virtually all institutional and ecumenical religious travel to Cuba outside of individual churches. In an unprecedented move, the Treasury Department recently rejected the renewal request of the travel license held by the National Council of Churches, which is composed of mainline Protestant denominations in the USA, as well as the denominational licenses of the Presbyterian Church (USA), United Methodist Church, and United Church of Christ. These denominations have longstanding relationships with their counterparts in Cuba.
Please call your U.S. Rep, Congressman Hastert, requesting that he join in signing the Congressional letter below (known as the "Flake/McGovern/Lee Dear Colleague Letter on Cuba") to Secretary Snow challenging these new travel restrictions. Ask to speak with Anthony Reed, Rep Hastert's Legislative Director. Rep. Hastert's D.C. phone number is 202/225-2976. Convey the message below personally, or leave it on the staffer’s voice mail. Here is what to say:
"Hello. My name is ____. I live in (name of town, or city neighborhood). I am calling to ask that Rep. Hastert sign on to the Flake/McGovern/Lee "Dear Colleague" letter to Treasury Secretary Snow challenging the denial of travel license renewals for travel to Cuba of the National Council of Churches, Presbyterian Church (USA), the United Methodist Church, and the United Church of Christ. These unprecedented travel restrictions undermine religious freedom by denying religious communities in the USA from meeting and dialoguing with their denominational counterparts in Cuba. The deadline to sign on to this letter is Thursday February 16. To sign on, please contact Lance Walker in the office of Republican Rep. Jeff Flake. Please contact me immediately to let me know if Rep.Hastert has joined in signing this important Congressional letter on religious freedom."
Please be friendly, but persistent. If they do not call you back by please keep calling them until you get a response. It is very important to have Republicans on this letter. While Rep. Hastert has always voted with the Administration to maintain travel restrictions, many other Republicans have overwhelmingly voted in the past to end the Cuba travel ban. Republican Representatives can sign on by calling Lance Walker from Rep. Flake's office, the Republican author of this letter.
As of February 10th, 28 members of Congress have signed on to the Flake/McGovern/Lee "Dear Colleague" letter challenging restrictions on religious travel to Cuba. Only 5 of those 28 members are from Illinois! Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D), Congressman Lane Evans (D), Congresswoman Judy Biggert (R), Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D), and Congressman Davis (D) have signed on.
Please let me know what you find out. Muchas gracias!
