Fuel Choices for American Security Act HR 4409   S 2025

 6/11/06

Submitted by Dee Huie - Legislative Committee Member - Environment

Background: The purpose of this bill is to promote national security and stability of the US economy by reducing the dependence of the US on foreign oil through the use of alternative fuels for new vehicle technology and other purposes. This bill would enable accelerated market penetration of efficient technologies and alternative fuels without adverse impact on air quality, provide financial incentives to encourage production and consumer purchases of oil saving technologies and fuel nationwide, and decrease American dependence on foreign oil.

Catholic Social Teaching: "Option for the poor" The rising prices of gasoline and home heating oil due to the unstable prices of foreign oil are a real burden for the poor."Care for God's Creation" The affect on the environment of using and manufacturing alternative energy must be onsidered. Presently, the poor and vulnerable are the ones most affected by pollution caused by the creation and use of energy.

Action: Support this bill but stress the need for cleaner alternative energy. Senator Barak Obama is a co-sponsor of S2025. Write and thank him for co-sponsoring the bill and ask that he support any changes to the bill which might add protection to the environment.

Sample letter: Dear Senator Obama, Thank you for co-sponsoring the Fuel Choices for American Security Act of 2005. I agree that we must take steps now to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. The rising price of gasoline and home heating fuel is especially burdensome for the poor among us. We must take steps to ensure that all our energy needs are met in the future. This bill should help us to begin to reach this goal.I would like to see the bill amended to give priority to research on fuels that could reduce air pollution rather than fund research of "fuels without adverse impact on air quality". The wording of the bill implies that present pollution during manufacturing and using fuels is acceptable. By providing the funds now to develop the cleanest possible alternative fuels, we will not only be able to meet our future energy needs but improve the future health of our citizens.Thank you again for being a co-sponsor of this bill.   Sincerely
