ACTION ALERT
CONTACT YOUR SENATORS Support AgJOBS and Oppose REAL ID Background: This week, the full U.S.
Senate may consider S. 359, the Agricultural Jobs Opportunity, Benefits, and Security Act of 2005 (AgJOBS) and H.R. 418, the REAL ID Act of 2005. S. 359 could be attached as an amendment to the emergency supplemental bill as Senators begin a floor vote. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops SUPPORTS the AgJOBS bill and OPPOSES the REAL ID Act. The AgJOBS legislation, sponsored by Senators Larry Craig (R-Idaho) and Edward M. Kennedy (D-Massachusetts), would legalize approximately 500,000 farm workers in this country. The REAL ID Act, introduced by Representative James Sensenbrenner (R-Wisconsin), would make it more difficult for asylum-seekers to gain entry into the United States; would deny drivers licenses to undocumented immigrants; and would confer unprecedented authority to the Department of Homeland Security to waive all laws which block the construction of barriers along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Take Action Now: Contact your Senators today and ask them to support Senator Craigs AgJOBS legislation and oppose the REAL ID Act on the Senate floor. Because the Senate could be debating these issues this week, call your Senator at 202-224-3121 with the following message: PLEASE SUPPORT SENATOR CRAIGS AGJOBS LEGISLATION AND OPPOSE THE REAL ID ACT WHEN THEY COME TO THE FLOOR OF THE U.S. SENATE. IN ADDITION, PLEASE OPPOSE ANY WEAKENING AMENDMENTS TO THE AGJOBS BILL.
