From our long time partners - Bread for the World
Funding for foreign aid programs that reduce poverty is under severe threat. Further cuts to programs such as development assistance and food aid would result in more lives lost. Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk sits on the committee that determines funding levels, and he needs to hear there is a strong and growing constituency that wants him to protect the "least of these."
Will you speak up with us?
Here are three things you can do this week:
1. Call Sen. Kirk's office Thursday, October 27, and say that you want your senator to protect poverty-focused international assistance from any and all cuts. Use Bread's 1-800-826-3688 number to reach the Capitol switchboard, and ask for Sen. Kirk's office. A group of Bread members met with Sen. Kirk's legislative director on Monday to deliver this message, and the response made clear that Sen. Kirk needs to hear from more and more of us! If you are not able to call on Thursday, calls on Friday will also be effective.
2. Share this email with your friends and encourage them to call. Can you get one person to call? Three? Five? Forwarding this email is a good step; calling your friends to follow up is even better!
3. Encourage your pastor and other religious leaders you know to (electronically) sign the faith leaders letter to Sen. Kirk. We delivered more than 70 signatures at the meeting in Chicago on Monday, and our goal is to surpass 100 by November 4! The letter will then be delivered to Sen. Kirk's office on Capitol Hill in early November. Religious leaders can add their names by calling or emailing me (Zach) at 1-312-890-3610 or zschmidt@bread.org.
Thank you for taking action in faith to defend our hungry neighbors. If you have any questions, just call or email us!
With fervent hope,
