"IF YOU WANT PEACE, WORK FOR JUSTICE!" |
Welcome!
We want to welcome you to our new email newsletter and action alerts system. Our former system crashed and so we have chosen to work with "Constant Contact," a company that serves many non-profit organizations. We hope this approach will improve our communications with you. The look and layout will evolve and will vary depending on whether it is an action alert, event notice or general newsletter.
In the process of migrating our database from the old system to the new, your email may have been imported to a list by mistake. You may change your action alert subscriptions or even remove yourself entirely from our emails by clicking on the link at the bottom of this email. We apologize for any inconvenience. |

Opportunity to Impact Local Hunger
I recently had the opportunity to meet with Dan Adzia and Julie Yurko from Northern Illinois Food Bank. Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) provides food to the hungry through food pantries, soup kitchens, etc. throughout northern Illinois. Five of the counties served by NIFB are also a part of the Joliet Diocese (DuPage, Grundy, Kankakee, Kendall, and Will). NIFB will distribute 13 million pounds of food this year in our area, a 40% increase over last year, a 77% increase since 2008! NIFB also provides food assistance to children through after school and summer meal programs. I was impressed to learn that NIFB is giving 360 chronically hungry children in our Diocese backpacks each Friday with enough healthy, kid-friendly food to feed themselves and two siblings for the entire weekend. There is no doubt that NIFB is serving the hungry right here in our own community. For more information about NIFB, visit their website at www.northernilfoodbank.org.
The Food Bank has recently launched its first Capital Campaign to build a new Food Distribution and Community Nutrition Center to enable them to handle more food more efficiently to meet the increasing demand. When NIFB moved into its current facility ten years ago, they were distributing 5 million pounds. Today they are distributing 35 million pounds, 7 times that amount, from the same facility! Julie and Dan are working to raise funds and awareness for this effort and would like to meet with you to tell you personally about NIFB and their Capital Campaign. I hope that you will consider accepting their offer. You can contact Julie Yurko, Senior Development Officer, at 630.443.6910X119 or jyurko@northernilfoodbank.org. |

Lenten Resources from the USCCB
You may be aware that Pope Benedict XVI has recently issued a message for Lent 2010. This year's message focuses on the theme "The justice of God has been manifested through faith in Jesus Christ." In the message, Pope Benedict reflects on the "profound link between faith in God who 'lifts the needy from the ash heap' (Ps 113,7) and justice towards one's neighbor." During Lent, he calls for our "conversion to Christ" which requires us to "exit the illusion of self-sufficiency in order to discover and accept one's own need - the need of others and God." Strengthened by this experience, he writes, "the Christian is moved to contribute to creating just societies, where all receive what is necessary to live according to the dignity proper to the human person and where justice is enlivened by love." The full text of the message can be found at Message of His Holiness Benedict XVI for Lent 2010.
To aid your reflection on the theme of love of God and neighbor during Lent, we are pleased to share the following resources:
· USCCB Lent calendar and reflections:www.usccb.org/lent/ The USCCB Lent page will feature justice-related items for most days during Lent.
· Questions to examine conscience in light of Catholic social teaching: Meant to be used as a supplement to your traditional examination of conscience, this resource can be distributed for use during Penance services and private confession. This resource is at www.usccb.org/sdwp/projects/socialteaching/examine.shtml.
· Podcasts: Way of the Cross toward Justice and Peace: This new resource, available on the CCHD homepage (www.usccb.org/cchd) in the near future, includes scripture, prayers, and reflection on issues facing communities across the United States.
