Forwarded from the USCCB

Dear Colleagues:

Haiti needs your help! In the wake of devastating hurricanes, tropical storms and rising food prices, the majority of Haitians are struggling to make ends meet. Catholic Relief Services has stepped up its assistance to Haiti. On a recent visit to Haiti, Bishop Wenski met with some of the thousands of Haitians that are newly employed in the apparel sector because of trade preference legislation (HOPE Act) supported by you.

However, the Haitian government is hampered in its efforts to reach out to its people because of its obligation to pay $1 million per week to the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank in debt repayment.

The attached alert (click here) invites you to call your Members of Congress during this election season and ask them to contact Treasury Secretary Paulson and urge the Secretary to work with the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank to cancel Haiti's debt without delay. This act will allow Haiti to redirect funds to much-needed relief and development programs.

Thank you,

Fr. Andrew Small, OMI
