Hunger Awareness Day

June 5, 2007 is Hunger Awareness Day – a day to acknowledge the thousands of people who live in the United States without enough food to eat. The Northern Illinios Food Bank has asked the Peace and Social Justice Ministry to seek participation of all parishes in this day by including hungry people in the Prayer of Faithful in all masses celebrated on Saturday/Sunday, June 2 & 3, 2007. This is not an appeal for the Northern Illinios Food Bank, but simply a request to mention Hunger Awareness Day and to pray for the hungry in the petitions. Please share this request with your liturgy committee. Thank you for your consideration. Thomas L. Garlitz, Director

The following was provided by the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

In the past year, Northern Illinois Food Bank has provided nearly 4.3 millions pounds of food to soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and group homes in the Diocese’s geographic area where more than 155,000 people live in poverty. Hunger in America 2005, a national research study published by America’s Second Harvest reports that Northern Illinois Food Bank network serves 37,400 different people every week. Please take this opportunity to include them in our prayers.

Northern Illinois Food Bank – a Member of America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network, joins all domestic hunger-relief organizations and thousands of communities nationwide in recognizing Hunger Awareness Day 2007. Throughout our 13 county service area, we will join with our partner emergency food providers, volunteers, hungry people, religious and community leaders at interfaith services, food distribution sites, and educational symposiums to pray, serve, and encourage others to work to end hunger.
