Farm workers still need your help...Bush freeze declaration does not do enough
Farm workers desperately need your help. Wednesday's announcement that President Bush has finally issued a freeze declaration is a step in the right direction, but simply not enough as it only included food assistance and extended unemployment benefits. Farm working families are in a time of crisis with thousands left jobless and unable to pay their bills.
While food donations are critical, just like in 1998 freeze, federal relief is needed towards mortgage and rental assistance as well as utility payments. Without this aid, thousands of families will lose their homes.
For more than two months farm workers have organized to have their voices heard. With no savings and no work, families don't know where to turn. Among their top concerns is finding the money to pay their mortgage or rent. With bills piling up, now young children are reading eviction letters to their parents and worrying about losing their homes.
The House supplemental freeze aid bill may reach the house floor as soon as today. However, it currently only includes aid for growers. The farm workers who have been devastated by January's freeze are not included in the bill.
The UFW is now lobbying to have a worker provision included in the main supplemental freeze aide bill. In addition Congress members Costa (D-CA) and Nunes (R-CA) have initiated a stand alone bill HR 925 to provide freeze relief for farm workers.
E-mail your congressional representative today and tell them that farm workers must be included in any freeze aid bill and that the federal relief needs to apply toward mortgage and rental assistance and utility payments.
Please help frozen out farm workers and their families keep a roof over their heads.
